How can you turn down peer pressure?
Peers can influence us in both negative and positive ways. Peers may help in finding a solution of our problems. They may also help us in finding new interest or activity. Peers may also influence us in negative ways. They may dare we to do something, which we know is not safe and is wrong like using drags or tobacco, stealing, cheating or breaking school rules. We feel good when we resist peer pressure. We can become responsible persons by resisting peer pressure to do something that could harm our health and through this we add to our self-esteem. For instance, if a student is persuaded by his classmates to take a particular kind of bag as they want him to be like them. But he knows that demand for a new bag can cause problem at his home, but he also wants that his friends should be friendly towards him. He cannot ask for a new bag as his parents bought a new bag for him at beginning of new school year. He has to make choice between his family and classmates, but both are important for him, his family and relationships come first for him. These are prior to him. So, he tells his peers that why he is not asking for a new school bag tells him they can be good friends without having same kinds of school bags. Knowing what comes first in our life helps us to choose to refuse peer pressure.
