Snakes Information With Pictures
Snakes
Snakes move by spreading their bodies into curves and then straightening. That is why they are almost unable to move on smooth surfaces. Snakes are although vertebrates but as they are very thin they can not have the internal organs like other vertebrates. Snakes inhale oxygen through lungs and they are having a single long lung instead of two lungs.
In cool parts of the world snakes hibernate during winter. Reproduction in some cases is by eggs while some females give birth to young ones.
A snake usually tracks its prey by using its long forked tongue. Some snakes, like grass snakes; catch their prey by grabbing and swallowing it. Some Snakes like pythons, loop their body round it and suffocate it by making impossible for the animal to breathe.
About one-third of all kinds of snakes use poison. This usually affects the nervous system, and paralyses the prey. The poison glands are at the back of the upper jaw, and the poison is always injected into the prey by hollow or grooved teeth called fangs.
Snakes cannot chew their food, as their teeth are like curved needles.
Snakes also use their poison to defend themselves, and can injure and sometimes kill large animals, including humans. Many people fear and dislike snakes and kill them whenever possible.
Some dangerous kinds of snakes are
• Costa Rican Eyelash Viper
• Rock Python
