Insects Information With Pictures

Insects
Insects are vertebrates that are able to fly. Their name describes them, for their bodies are made in sections. It is generally easy to see the three main sections of an insect’s body: the head, the thorax, and the abdomen. Each section deals with a particular part of the animal’s life.
The head is concerned with finding out about the world around it. The insect has a mouth, eyes and, antennae which are for smelling as well as for feeling, on its head. The thorax is concerned with movement. Most insects have three pairs of legs (some have only two) and most adult insects have two pairs of wings attached to the thorax. The main part of the gut and digestive system in the abdomen and so are the six organs. Insects may also store fat in the abdomen.
Outside Skeleton
Like crabs and spiders to which they are related, insects’ bodies are supported and protected by a hard outer armor, the exoskeleton. This is waterproof and prevents them from drying up in the air, as may happen to some other small creatures. It enables insects to live almost everywhere in the world, even in deserts and on mountains, although few survive in the sea.
The great disadvantage of the exoskeleton is that it cannot stretch, so all insects get larger in a series of stages called moults. At certain times the hard exoskeleton splits and the insect, which has grown a new pliable skin beneath the old one, wriggles out. At first this new cover is soft and can expand to allow for growth. But it hardens quite quickly to protect and limit the insect once more.
There are some different kinds of insects than any other sort of animal. One reason for this is that all insects are small. Each kind of insect can live in a tiny part of the environment. Even a single tree may be home to lots of them. Some may live among the roots, some on the bark, some under the bark, some on the twigs and some on the leaves. Some may be active during the daytime, while others are active at night. Different kinds of insect are active at different time of the year. If we think of the environment as a cake, each kind of insect takes a very tiny slice, so very many of them can share it.
Feeding
Most insects feed on only on type of food and cannot change from it. But between them, insects can eat almost every sort of food. Because of this, some of them are pests of human crops and stores. Most, however, do not damage, Bees and butterflies pollinate flowers and crops and are useful to us. Ladybirds and some hoverflies feed on pests such as greenfly. We rarely think of the most important insects. These are the recyclers, such as beetles, which feed on the remains of dead plants and animals. As these remains pass through the insects, they are broken down into chemicals which fertilize the soil. When returned to it. Plants can then make use of the materials from things that have died, for new growth.
